Similar to the Sandhill Cranes going to Kearney, I migrate to Lincoln on occasion to roost at my old college bar, Duffy’s Tavern. There’s something special about the place for me. Could be nostalgic memories. May be the great location. Definitely a factor is that they’re the only bar in Nebraska to serve Old Style Beer in the bottle.

Last week, prior to the 11:00 a.m. kickoff of the Nebraska Cornhuskers taking on the mighty Ohio State Buckeyes, Jenny, our friend Justin, and I soared into the bar for a couple drinks. Unfortunately, that day the bartender apologized that they were temporarily out of my favorite Old Style, so I mixed it up with a bourbon and Coke. Still tasty!

“Duff’s” as We Called it in the 90s

Founded in 1936, Duffy’s is a casual, comfortable bar on O Street in downtown Lincoln. The establishment is known for friendly atmosphere, great live music, and claiming the “Home of the Fishbowl.” Many national acts have performed there, including 311, Bright Eyes, the Boss Martians, Slobberbone, and Wesley Willis.

Nevermind that Nirvana Played Duffy’s

The evening of May 13, 1990 the underground alternative rock/grunge band “Nirvana” with lead singer Kurt Cobain took the stage at Duffy’s stage. The packed bar enjoyed a wild show, not realizing Nirvana would almost singlehandedly launch alternative music into mainstream pop culture when their second album, Nevermind, was released the following year.

The night of this concert I was living in my college apartment only blocks away at 17th & N Streets. I’m sorry I missed it as I was unaware of who Nirvana was. But this legendary night is one for the history books of the Lincoln music scene.

Home of the Fishbowl

Do you enjoy sharing time out on the town with friends? The key word is “sharing” here, because Duffy’s is well-known for its Fishbowl cocktail. The massive concoction is mixed and served in a large goldfish bowl with a long, colorful straw for each in your party. The 50+ drink options include “Dirty Shirley,” “Shark Water,” and the “Purple Hooter.”

Don’t miss Duffy’s the next time you’re in Lincoln, Nebraska. It’s a place you’ll make great memories …unless you drink too much of a fishbowl. Enjoy responsibly!
