Chip’s Restaurant & Bar in Wahoo, Nebraska
Saturday, January 29th was a very windy, chilly day, but beautifully sunny. Jenny and I had plans to meet her brother and sister for lunch in Wahoo, Nebraska at a restaurant called “Chip’s Restaurant & Bar.”
Located about 40 minutes west of Omaha via the flatlands of Nebraska Highway 92, the ride went quickly. Wahoo is a city with a population of 4,508 (2010 census) and the county seat of Saunders County, Nebraska.
In 1996 comedian David Letterman dubbed the city of Wahoo the “home office” of the popular CBS show “The Late Show with David Letterman.” For a number of years the community embraced the title.
We arrived to find the restaurant about half full of patrons and we were seated right away. I always like to ask my server what a “new-to-me” place specializes in and she said everything was delicious, but gave us a few ideas of the most popular items. Among those were the Chicken Fried Steak and the Philly Beef Sandwich. I am a HUGE fan of both, but have been on a quest to find the best Philly in the region, so I opted for that. Jenny chose her favorite Patty Melt Sandwich.
For a side, the server suggested we try their onion rings – and after I received the meal I was SO glad I did! I don’t have rings very often and am very picky about their flavor and texture. Let me say these are some of the best onion rings I have ever eaten (nearly inhaled)! They are hand-battered and deep fried to perfection. Heavenly.
My Philly Beef sandwich was delicious as well, but I could not stop talking about the rings. Jenny loved her sandwich (you may call her a Patty Melt connoisseur) and side of rings as well …though not as verbally enthusiastic as I was. Simply put, she is not quite as animated when it comes to the love of food as I am – and our difference in waistlines shows.
The prices at Chip’s are reasonable and the service was good. The restaurant has a cozy small town feel where residents bumped into each other and cheerfully greeted each other. I highly recommend trying out Chip’s and it’s well worth the drive. The town features a number of small businesses, including what looked to be some great antique stores. You can also visit Lake Wanahoo NRD Recreation Area which is just northeast of town.
