Argentine Butter Video: How a Cruise Ship Lunch Went Viral
Disclosure: Tonadita is hosting our trip to Argentina. All opinions are my own.
It was a very small pat of butter.
Seven months ago, on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship, I sat down to lunch with my wife Jenny, tasted Argentine butter for the first time, and hit record. No script. No plan. Just me being goofy me, professing my love of Tonadita butter. I had no idea what was coming.
Then Argentina Noticed…
That Argentine butter video took off across South America, and especially in Argentina. It passed a million views, made national news there, and set TikTok buzzing too. Somewhere in the middle of it all, I became “Mr. Butter,” and my phone filled up with messages.
The Messages Were the Best Part
The views were fun. The messages were something else. People wrote to tell me how proud they are of their food and their culture. Some invited Jenny and me to stay with them if we ever came to visit. Strangers, opening their homes on the strength of one goofy video. In an online world that can feel pretty sharp-elbowed, it was the opposite, and it has kept surprising me for seven months.
And Now, the Trip
Tonadita, the company behind the butter, is taking Jenny and me to Argentina. We’ll spend time in Buenos Aires, tour the factory, meet the owners, and finally say thank you in person, with a stop in the Córdoba mountains along the way.
A very special thank you to the Piazza family for making it happen, and to everyone in Argentina who watched, shared, and wrote to say hello. Gracias.
One very small pat of butter. Tonight, it’s the reason we’re boarding a very long flight.
