For decades, my family has found solace in the tranquil embrace of Ponca State Park, nestled in the heart of Ponca, Nebraska. A cherished tradition since the mid-1970s, this past June we embarked on a journey 115 miles north of Omaha, drawn by the allure of this charming town and its exceptional state park.
Our sojourn always includes a visit to the endearing Keller Pharmacy, a local gem known for its well-stocked aisles of everyday essentials and friendly service. Yet, what truly sets Keller’s apart is its enchanting soda fountain—a relic of times gone by.
In the vast expanse of Nebraska, Keller Pharmacy proudly upholds one of the state’s last remaining old-fashioned soda fountains. This summer, we decided to introduce my wife to its magic, and our taste buds were in for a treat beyond measure. While most modern establishments churn out shakes from impersonal soft-serve machines, Keller takes a different approach. Their malts (and shakes) are meticulously crafted from hand-scooped ice cream, a practice that harkens back to a simpler era.
Now, what exactly sets a malt apart from its shake counterpart? The answer lies in malted milk powder—a transformative ingredient that lends an unparalleled depth to the flavors. Starting with the classic foundation of ice cream and milk, the addition of malted milk powder results in a taste that’s both opulent and toasty, elevating the experience far beyond that of a traditional milkshake.
The essence of malt itself is a revelation—a sweetener characterized by its toasted, caramel-esque, and fruit-infused notes. Crafted from processed cereal grains, it adds an unmistakable richness to the concoction.
On that warm summer day, my wife Jenny, my daughter, and her boyfriend, along with our furry companions, found respite on a park bench outside the pharmacy. As we indulged in our malted delights, the world seemed to slow down, allowing us to savor not only the flavors but also the fleeting moments of togetherness.
Our visit coincided with a special time—Virginia “Ginny” Keller, the pharmacy’s owner, was away receiving the well-deserved Health Mart Lifetime Achievement Award. With more than half a century dedicated to enhancing the well-being of her community, Virginia’s legacy is nothing short of inspiring. Her commitment to the health of generations deserves our heartfelt congratulations.
